UNPRECEDENTED GENEROSITY
In a massive act of generosity Schull has been given property valued over a million euros (a few years ago) so that it has the capacity to host major sailing events and expand the existing Fastnet Outdoor Education Centre.
The land to the south of the Sailing Centre (below the hospital) is owned by the Crespo Foundation, and with the good will of Ulrike Crespo and Michael Satke, the land will be leased, in perpetuity, to the VEC and the lease money will again be returned to Schull in the form of 4 scholarships.

SCHULL'S OWN GREEN FLAG BEACH
Life's a Beach in West Cork

Schull Fastnet Marine Outdoor Education Centre hosted the award cermony for Blue Flag & Green Flag Beaches Friday last. These awards are internationally recognised and are such an important signal of the quality of our beaches.
Green Coast Awards go to beaches for their, clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty. They may not have the necessary built infrastructure required to meet the criteria set for Blue Flag status however they are exceptional places to visit and enjoy our rich coastal heritage and diversity. Blue Flag & Green Coast award schemes use water quality information from samples taken in line with the EU Bathing Water Directive. The programme can assist with this work by supplying materials, contacts and advice on coastal environmental issues. The Green Coast Award in funded by the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government and is supported by Fáilte Ireland, Coca-Cola and SECAD (South East Cork Area Development).
For information on water quality results please visit the EPA’s website www.bathingwater.ie.
Cork did very well in the awards overall & can boast 10 Blue Flags & 10 Green Coast Awards overall, which puts us in joint first place with Donegal for total awards granted. Some have retained their Blue flags from last year, Garryvoe, Garretstown, Garrylucas, Inchydoney, Owenahincha, Warren, Tragumna & Barleycove. Claycaslte regained their award after losing in 2009 & Redbard has been awarded with Blue Flag for the first time. There were 8 new Green Coast Awards for Claycastle, Ballyrisode, Garryvoe, Ring, Rocky Bay, Cadogans Strand, Galley Cove & Garinish. Red Strand & Inch retained their awards. These awards reflect a very high standard of beaches in Cork but more particularly West Cork.
Cadogan's Strand is now on par with some of the other favourite beaches in West Cork & the Mizen. There are so many to thank for this huge achievement, Local County Council Engineer, Billy Horgan, Scoil Mhuire National Schooll, Schull Community College, Schull Tidy Towns & Schull Development Association . There has also been a dedicated team of volunteers cleaning the beach regularly of litter & thank you to you most of all.

Schull Triathlon 2010
This years Schull Corona Fastnet Triathlon was the biggest
and best yet!
With 300 participants on the day and decent weather, Schull was the place to be on Saturday. The organising committee did an outstanding job this year in preparing for the event and everything (minus a few parking spaces) went smoothly and without a hitch.
Everyone concerned should take a bow and accept a great round of praise for their efforts this year. All the shops around Schull were buzzing over the weekend and passing comments were all positive so we can look forward to the next event and hope to see everyone out and about during the weekends.

WHATS HAPPENING IN SCHULL
After a Summer Season which saw the Schull Inshore Rescue Service called out on 10 occasions between April and Sept, the last number of weeks have been relatively quiet.
Luckily no lives were lost, or have been lost, since that ill-fated night last Dec. in Long Island Channel when one Swiss visitor died.
During the past couple of months crews have been busy upgrading their skills and now 13 out of a crew panel of 15 are fully qualified coxswains.
The service also welcomes on board two new crew members, Thomas O'Callaghan and John MacSweeney.
A Coastal Skipper course run by Niall McAllister of the West Cork Sailing and Powerboating Centre, Adrigole, is presently being attended by 12 members of the service.
In Sept. 10 crewmembers attended a 1-day Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques course at the National Maritime College of Ireland. All completed the course successfully.
Schull Inshore Rescue is at all times open to new membership, and, anyone can pick up an application form by contacting either Tim O'Connor, Sec., or Denis Quinlan, Hon. Sec.
